CBAM in the EU and the UK: key developments and practical implications for traders

CBAM in the EU and the UK: key developments and practical implications for traders

Carbon pricing is reshaping global trade. The EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism entered its definitive phase on 1 January 2026 – the first fully operational border carbon adjustment in the world – while the UK’s equivalent is set to follow on 1 January 2027. With the first EU CBAM certificate price now published, an updated Q&A issued by the Commission, and the UK’s implementing legislation passing through Parliament, the regulatory picture is becoming clearer. This event brings together two leading specialists to break down what each mechanism requires, how they compare, and what your organisation must do now.

During the event, we will:

  • Review the EU CBAM in its definitive phase, including the first certificate price published, key clarifications from the Commission's updated May 2026 Q&A;

  • Examine the UK CBAM framework enacted under the Finance Act 2026 covering sectors in scope, the January 2027 start date, HMRC's enforcement role, and the secondary legislation still to follow;

  • Identify the lessons the UK should draw from the EU's real-world experience;

  • Discuss the practical implications for businesses operating in both jurisdictions.
